Eizo CE240W 24" LCD Display


The Eizo CE240W 24" LCD Display is the epitome of LCD display excellence. Not only do I have no reservations about giving the Eizo five stars, but I sincerely wish I had more stars to award it. Sure the Eizo is not cheap, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing low end about the CE240W. If there were ever a poster product for you get what you pay for, Eizo has it right here. I have yet to see a display with better specs anywhere, and if you know one let me know because I have to see it!

Features of the Eizo CE240W 24" LCD Display

The features of the Eizo CE240W 24" LCD Display read like a geek's wish list. The native resolution is 1920x1200 with a contrast ratio virtually unheard of for an LCD monitor of 1000:1. Wow, most high end monitors have a contrast ratio of between 500:1 to 800:1 at best. For comparison the mighty Apple 30" Cinema display only has a contrast ratio of 700:1. The Eizo has a great contrast ratio, no doubt about that but what about brightness? How about a stellar 450 cd/m2! The aforementioned Apple 30" Cinema Display has a brightness of 400 cd/m2 as comparison and the brightest monitor I have reviewed recently was the Viewsonic VX2025WM 20" LCD that sported a 300cd/m2 brightness. This is a rare occasion for me when the product I am reviewing is better than the measuring stick I typically use. The Eizo ColorEdge CE240W is raising the bar significantly.


Eizo also has great viewing angles on the CE240W of 178 degrees horizontally and vertically, you almost have to be behind the monitor before the image is greatly affected. The CE240W's weakest point for gamers will likely be its gray-to-gray response time of 8ms. While certainly that is no slouch of a response time, faster monitors can be had, but at a huge hit in image quality. The viewable image size is 611 mm diagonally and the color pallet is 16.77 million. Both analog VGA and digital DVI-I connectors are included.

Eizo also included a built in USB hub on the side of the monitor that has two ports, one downstream and one upstream. The monitor stand on the CE240W is perfect and offers adjustability in most every angle you can think of. Height adjustability has long travel over a range of 95mm. The tilt for the monitor can go 60 degrees up and 5 degrees down. As you can see from the image above, the CE240W can almost lay flat for viewing while standing. You can also easily swivel the Eizo up to 172 degrees both right and left. The one thing the Eizo can't do is rotate for portrait viewing, which in all honesty I have never wanted to use. If that is a factor for you, Eizo has monitors that will do that.

One of the best things for design pros and business users about the Eizo ColorEdge CE240W is the included color calibration software making the act of calibrating the CE240W quick and easy. If you use a hardware calibration tool, the software will interface directly with Eye-One, MonacoOPTIX and Sypder2 calibration devices. Ambient light calibration is handled easily with the software allowing you to set the monitors white point to ensure that what you see on screen is what you end up with in print.

The CE240W is a wide aspect ratio monitor at a true 16:10. The aspect ratio allows you to have two documents side by side in popular office applications like word and even run multiple programs on the screen at once. I was able to run four web browsers when working with no problems at all reading the text in each window. This is a huge time saver. Color accuracy is boosted with Eizo's stock 14-bit color processing that provides for smooth gray transitions and midtone transitions as well.

Eizo CE240W in Use

I can sum my time with the Eizo CE240W up in one word, stunning! There is simply not a better monitor to be had on the current market than the CE240W. No matter what you plan to do with it, it just excells. Movie watching on the Eizo was the best I have ever seen. The dark scenes in my test movie, Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, were so much clearer and sharper than with any other monitor I have used there was no comparison. Sometimes I see pixelation and dithering in the gray tones especially on lower end monitors, I didn't see any of that with the CE240W.

Gaming on the Eizo CE240W is hard to describe. The image quality response of the monitor to rapidly changing colors and quick motion is the best I have seen yet. No ghosting or smearing on games or movies was noticed. Gamers if your in the market for a high end monitor like the Apple 30" Cinema Display or the 30" Dell, seriously consider giving up the six inches in screen real estate and going with the superior specs of the Eizo CE240W. That said, I am seriously hoping Eizo has a 30" display to pull out of their hats. I'll be the first in line to buy!

abit AW9D-Max Mainboard


The PC enthusiast crowd out there knows that for a long time abit was one of the biggest and best names in enthusiast class mainboards. However, for a long while abit slipped and their performance dropped compared to the other big names in the marketplace like Asus. abit is back at the top now with their newest mainboard for the LGA775 Intel socket that is compatible with the Core 2 CPUs all the way up to my test machines Intel X6800 Core 2 Extreme.

Features & Use of the abit AW9D-Max Mainboard

abit decked the AW9D-Max out with nearly everything that a PC enthusiast could want starting with the Intel 975x chipset supporting Intel CPUs with up to a 1066 MHz front side bus, dual DDR2 800, dual PCI-E 16x slots for CrossFire graphics, and a whopping 7 SATA 3G ports. Also included is one eSATA port for external drives, dual PCI-E gigabit Ethernet adapters, dual IEEE 1394 FireWire headers, 7.1 channel HD AuidoMax sound, silent passive cooling and abit’s own uGuru tech.

At first glance, the packaging is large and very attractive. The view through front panel gives you a look at the unique audio riser card and the OTES-2 passive cooling pipes. OTES 2 is what abit calls their passive Northbridge and Southbridge cooling system. Those in Europe will be glad to know that the AW9D-Max is RoHS compliant as well.

Abit went with an AuidoMAX riser card for their onboard sound solution to remove the sound as far from the noise generating components on the mainboard as possible. Onboard sound is a big deal on this mainboard because if you intend to run dual graphics cards, you will very likely not be able to get a soundcard into the system.

If you are like me and typically shun onboard sound for the likes of an X-Fi card don’t fret, you typically buy a soundcard to get the kind of sound quality abit delivers with the AuidoMAX card. In fact, the AudioMAX HD system is Dolby Master Certified and delivers fantastic Dolby Digital 5.1 sound via SPDIF optical output. There are also enough analog connectors on the riser card for 7.1 surround sound.

If overclocking is your thing, this board will do it abit utilized what they call OC strips on the back of the board to dissipate the extra heat overclocking of components generates. The uGuru software included also allows you to overclock your system voltages and your CPU from within the uGuru application. OC Guru AutoDrive will also automatically over clock your system for you.

Do it yourself types, abit used a very friendly overclocking bios that puts all the settings you need form timings to voltages and the FSB in your hands. uGuru also provides hardware monitoring of system temperatures, fan speeds and voltages.

With the AW9D-Max, abit opted to forgo all legacy connections so you do not get serial or parallel ports for printers. Interestingly, while abit ditched the parallel and serial ports they opted to keep the PS2 ports for the mouse and keyboard. I seriously doubt that buyers of this board will be using anything other than USB powered keyboards and mice. I would have rather seen abit ditch the PS2 legacy ports and go with more USB ports personally.

Dual PCI-E x16 slots allow you to run dual graphics cards, though a bit confusingly since abit includes an SLI connector and the board runs an Intel chipset that can support SLI, you can only run ATI’s CrossFire dual card solution on the AW9D-Max. Personally, I would have preferred SLI and I figure someone will release some hacked drivers to allow this board to support SLI.

For testing, I used an ATI X1900 XT and an ATI X1900 CrossFire edition card. CrossFire performed well and I noted no issues at all during testing. The sole problem I found with the AW9D-Max running dual graphics cards was that the second graphics card covered the BIOS reset jumper. I once ran a bit too much overclocking on the system and needed to reset BIOS to get it running again. I ended up having to pull the second graphics card to access the BIOS jumper, which is a huge pain and quite a problem on a board destined to see lots of overclocking with dual cards in the system.

Abit makes the solution to this BIOS reset problem in their uGuru panel that moves CMOS reset to the front panel along with overclocking functions and system monitoring. However, I was still surprised to see something that important overlooked in the design of the AW9D-Max.

The only other thing I can say bad about the abit board is that if you run dual graphics cards that use two slots per card say goodbye to all hope of running other expansion cards in the system. I was unable to utilize my X-fi and you won’t be able to get network cards or physics cards into the system either.

At the end of the day, I was able to over look the few shortcomings of the abit AW9D-Max thanks to the overwhelming amount of fantastic features and great performance of the board. If you overclock a lot, I suggest you either get the uGuru panel or expect to have to pull your second graphics card every now and then. Overall, the abit AW9D-Max is one of the best Core 2 compatible mainboards you will find.

Another point I was concerned about was that my cordless phone also uses the 2.4GHz frequency as well. I noticed no interference between the controller and the phone, even when using them both at the same time.

Picking up this controller is like seeing an old friend after years, everything is familiar. If you are used to play station the learning cure with the Logitech Cordless Rumble Pad 2 Gamepad is next to nothing. OCZ ATV Turbo 4GB Flash Drive Review


Features & Specifications

OCZ quotes read and write speeds for its OCZ ATV Turbo flash drive 33-35MB/s and 26-30MB/s respectively. The storage capacity for the drive is 4GB and it works with Windows and Mac computers. The rubber housing is shock and water-resistant and the drive has an orange LED on the back of the drive flashes when the drive is working. OCZ also covers the drive with a lifetime warranty.

Benchmarks & Testing

To test the OCZ ATV Turbo I used HD Tach, Sandra XII, transferred files to and from the drive while timing the operation. I also washed, and dried the drive with some laundry to see just how durable it was. The first test was Sandra XII’s removable storage benchmark. This test showed that the OCZ ATV Turbo had a drive index of 7740 ops/min and an endurance factor of 19.70. The Corsair Flash Survivor that I recently reviewed had a drive index of 9575 ops/min and an endurance rating of 16.4 for comparison.

The next test was HD Tach which showed the OCZ ATV Turbo had an average read speed of 27.9MB/s and an average write speed of 23.5MB/s. To compare the Corsair Flash Survivor had an average read speed of 23MB/s and an average write speed of 20.6MB/s. That makes the OCZ ATV Turbo quite a bit faster than the Corsair drive.

For the final test, I copied a folder with 944MB of data in it to the OCZ ATV Turbo and then copied the same folder from the OCZ ATV Turbo to the system drive and times the process with a stopwatch. Writing the folder to the OCZ ATV Turbo took 1-minute and 9-seconds, copying the folder from the OCZ ATV Turbo to the system drive took right at 41 seconds.

The OCZ ATV Turbo is certainly fast, but the drive promises shock and water resistance as well. To test the shock resistance I threw the drive onto concrete as hard as I could. The OCZ ATV Turbo worked without any issues after throwing it down repeatedly. To test the resistance to water, I ran the OCZ ATV Turbo through a full washer cycle in the pocket of my jeans. When the load was done, I found the cap had come off the OCZ ATV Turbo at some point in the wash cycle. I plugged the OCZ ATV Turbo into my computer expecting it to be ruined. However, the OCZ ATV Turbo performed flawlessly after its washing.

After the run through the washer, I put the drive back into the jeans for a dry cycle on high heat. Once again, when the load was dry, I found the cap to the OCZ ATV Turbo had come off at some point. Fortunately, the OCZ ATV Turbo still performed flawlessly. The cap covering the USB port comes off frequently in instances like this, which could lead to failure of the drive. My review sample survived without issue though, and most likely yours will too. Overall the OCZ ATV Turbo is the fastest flash drive I have tested to date and is durable enough to stand up to the rigors of the daily grind.

Yepp YP-P2: Samsung's Challenge to the Apple iPod Touch


Ok we admit it, we thought the device pictured over the weekend by Akihabara News was just the iPhone obscured by that iLuv case. But really, those pics were a bit preoccupied with something other than the, ehem, gadget. Fortunately, the good kids over at dapreview sorted it out with pictures and a video of Samsung's sleek new flash player: the Yepp YP-P2. A bit of digging also reveals plenty of specs courtesy of several unsubstantiated German language sites. These include up to 8GB of flash; biggie 3-inch, 428 x 240 pixel touch-screen display; MP3, WMV, WMA, and H.264 (MPEG4 AVC), MPEG-4 (ASF) support; Bluetooth (oh yes); integrated speaker and mic; and FM radio in a device just 100 x 52 x 9.2-mm thin. They've even implemented some of that virtual click-wheel action hinted at by Apple patent applications but never quite implemented. Possibly in an effort to compete against the recently announced iPod touch, Samsung has launched the Samsung Yepp YP-P2, a personal media player that boasts a touchscreen display. Surely, these can't be the first touchscreen media players, but the comparisons are inevitable. The touchscreen measures three inches across the diagonal, rocks a 480x272 resolution, and has a beautiful 16:9 aspect ratio.

Measuring just 9.9mm thick -- Samsung loves thin gadgetry -- the Yepp YP-P2 also has Bluetooth 2.0 and support for a Korea-only iTunes-like music store (Samsung Media Studio). In fact, the Bluetooth-ness will pair with two Bluetooth headphones and one wired headphone simultaneously.viaAving.

HIS Radeon HD 2900 PRO 512MB Early Test


Introduction

We wanted it and now we’ve got it. The HD 2900 PRO has been one of the most talked about products since the release of the HD 2900 series from AMD. Sure the HD 2900 XT offers great value for money these days due to some excellent driver updates from AMD, but the bottom line is that the card still comes in at around $500 AUD or $400 USD meaning that it’s simply out of reach for a lot of people.


When the X1950PRO launched it wasn’t greeted with the warmest welcome, much like the HD 2900 XT. While on paper it looked like it was going to be the next best thing, poor drivers at launch and a high price tag saw the card not really wowing a lot of people. The 7900GS from NVIDIA thanks to its extremely high overclocking ability was simply the low high-end card or high mid-range card to have.

Hopefully AMD have learnt from their mistakes and the HD 2900 PRO is simply going to blow us away as the next best thing. Its main competition is the 8800GTS 320MB from NVIDIA.

Initial pricing from HIS shows the card’s MSRP at $250USD, for comparison the 8800GTS 320MB starts at about $290 USD. As we see more brands come on though and the initial price premium drop there isn’t any reason why we won’t see the HD 2900 PRO closer to the $200 USD mark.

All it really has to do is perform better than the 8800GTS 320MB and the card is an absolute shoe-in but that might be easier said than done.

The particular HD 2900 PRO we have in hand today is the 512MB model from HIS. Before we get stuck into the benchmarks we will have a look at the card and what HIS have managed to do with the package.

Samsung Electronics announced the launching of his 2G slim mp3 to player, the YP-S5 in the IFA 2007 next to arrive, which comes equipped with loudspeaker incorporated stere, screen of 1,8 inches, tuner of radio FM and this time integrated Bluetooth 2.0.

Samsung to launch its new 7-inch digital photo frames

SEOUL, Korea -- Samsung Electronics launched its 7-inch digital photo frames ‘SPF-72V’ and ‘SPF-72H’ models in Korea market, which support USB port and memory card slots.

In particular, the SPF-72V adopted Wi-Fi optimized for Windows Vista, which displays photo images stored in your pc via Windows Media Player 11 without any wired connection. It can update photos via RSS(Rich Site Summary) feeds from websites. With its built-in speaker, it plays mp3 and video files.

First catch in hand of Xacti DMX-HD700 of Sanyo

SEOUL, Korea -- Sanyo announced that its 7.1M mini HD camcorder 'Xacti DMX-HD700' would be launched in Japan market on October 19.

Using any SD/SDHC card as its storage, the slim camcorder supports MPEG4/AVC(H.264) video file compressing that enables users to conveniently upload its video clips to online social network sites like blogs. With its ‘Simple’ mode, even beginners could create high quality HD movies. Users can enjoy the filmed content on an HDTV via its HDMI port.

When it comes to shooting still images, the DMX-HD700 allows users to get more clear images by offering various functionalities including ‘Face Chaser Function’ and it also supports PictBridge function to print out its images through connected printer without a PC.

Sanyo had envisaged this morning a small briefing on its last products and in particular the HD1000 and HD700, even if, in the next few weeks, we will publish a complete test after having received the new toys of Sanyo, we want to share our first impressions.

First of all, the quality of manufacture is with the rendez_vous, the products ARE REALLY WELL MADE.
Even if the HD700 replaces H2, both are totalements different, however the HD700 is able to record in 720p without any concern and with an excellent result within the framework of a daily use, for example for your blog. Photo level, one is in the average of what Xacti usually offer, a good quality but without more, once again, completely honest within the framework of a frequent use.

Once again, we will receive soon the HD1000 and will 700 and one will say some to you more, those be waterproofs? Cross the fingers!

Asus, DFI, MSI Give Mobos The Crossfire Treatment

Crossfire's NVIDIA SLI Challenge?


Although NVIDIA has a nine-month head start over ATI in the dual graphics chipset space and has the lead in both graphics performance and platform technology, the firm still continues to aggressively secure its place in the market. One good example is NVIDIA's acquisition of Taiwanese chipset maker ULi in December, which has added years to the company's already rich chipset-IP war chest. Moreover, NVIDIA can probably launch a two-card SLI system with four GPUs at any time the market warrants it.

NVIDIA's recently launched nForce4 SLI X16 chipsets for both AMD and Intel sockets offer two, full-featured x16 PCI Express ports. However, the PCI Express lanes are split between the Northbridge and Southbridge sections of the chipset, as opposed to allocating 32 lanes locally, which could potentially pose a performance penalty in the future. But, for today's applications, this design disadvantage will not be noticeable.

So where does that leave ATI? We thought a good place to start would involve an in-depth analysis and look at some of the first motherboards that are based on ATI's Radeon Xpress 200 Crossfire Edition chipset. What we can say from the outset is that if a good gaming experience is what you are after, the ATI Crossfire solution largely runs head to head with NVIDIA's SLI systems.

ATI's chipsets, however, do pose some interesting design challenges for motherboard makers, since ATI currently is unable to deliver a state-of-the-art Southbridge that can offer

Serial ATA II and Gigabit Ethernet. As a result, motherboard makers look for third party Southbridge alternatives in order to offer better overall value (e.g. Asus' A8R-MVP). This is particularly interesting because alternative Southbridges so far have only been used to reduce costs.

How Dual Graphics Works

Both ATI and NVIDIA deliver dual graphics solutions that effectively use two graphics chips in order to accelerate 3D processing. Future technology generations may easily use four or even more graphics chips to further increase performance. Just plug two suitable graphics cards (read on for details) into the x16 PCI Express graphics slots on your ATI Crossfire or NVIDIA SLI motherboard and connect them using the corresponding solutions. You then only have to enable dual graphics mode with the graphics driver control panel.

You may wonder why this is something people would want to have, given that many games already exceed performance figures of 100 frames per seconds (FPS). There are, however, many options that can be enabled in order to increase the visual experience. Antialiasing helps to smooth edges, for example, or anisotropic filtering can reduce aliasing effects while producing less blur. Finally, some visual effects require each and every image to be run through the pixel shaders multiple times, which can have quite an impact on performance. Future 3D models (e.g. DirectX 10) will allow for fully programmable shaders, which will enable a graphics subsystem (single-, dual- or multi-GPU graphics) to do more calculations than ever before.

ATI ideally requires one so-called Crossfire master graphics card (these have not yet been available for the X1000 series) that is paired with any X1000 series model that at least matches the chip model number (e.g. Radeon X1800XT Master plus a regular Radeon X1800XT). The Crossfire Master card features an additional piece of silicon that takes care of the final image composition, while the workload is shared between two (or more) graphics processing units.

CNET editors' review

The Canon Pixma MP530 is one of two office-oriented inkjet all-in-one printers in Canon's offering. For a mere $200, you get a machine that prints, scans, copies, and faxes and does everything quite well. Photo enthusiasts will be disappointed by the lack of media card slots and a preview LCD, but the printer does feature a PictBridge port for direct printing from a camera. The included automatic document feeder and built-in duplexer are much appreciated; in fact, the only office feature this all-in-one lacks is built-in networking capability. If you don't mind working around that, this is a nearly perfect workhorse for a home-office environment; we haven't seen a better office-oriented all-in-one in this price range. If networking is your highest priority, try the Brother MFC-5840cn, but you'll be happier with the quality of the MP530's prints and scans. Canon's other office all-in-one is the Pixma MP830, which provides faster speeds, media card slots, and a preview LCD, but no networking capability, for an additional $100.

Design of Canon Pixma MP530

The Canon Pixma MP530 is fairly compact, though boxy, for an office-oriented all in one that prints, scans, copies, and faxes. It sits 18.5 inches wide, 18.4 inches deep, and 10.4 inches tall and weighs a manageable 28 pounds. The automatic document feeder mounted on top of the scanner lid handles up to 30 pages of originals for copying or scanning. The scanner platen can manage up to A4-size originals, but using the ADF, you can scan up to legal-size originals. The scanner lid's hinges lift to accommodate thicker originals, too.

Not surprisingly, the office-oriented Pixma MP530 has limited photo printing options. While it does have a PictBridge port for printing directly from PictBridge-enabled still and video cameras, it lacks media card slots. The Brother MFC-5840cn offers media card slots.

The MP530 has two options for paper input: a cassette and an auto sheet feeder. This arrangement is convenient if you often switch back and forth between plain paper and specialty papers. Each can hold up to 150 sheets of plain paper. The auto sheet feeder folds out from the rear of the printer while the cassette slides out from the bottom front. Both have adjustable paper guides to handle different sizes of paper. The output tray folds out from the body of the printer with a touch of a button, and an extension flap folds out to corral longer pages. Unfortunately, while there is a door in the back of the printer for clearing paper jams, the printer isn't set up to handle straight pass-through, which is sometimes problematic if you're printing on stiffer media that resists bending, such as card stock.

The control panel is mounted on a "shelf" on the front of the printer. A two-line text LCD lets you navigate the various menus, but it's not backlit. Dedicated function buttons let you switch between copy, fax, and scan tasks. To access the menu for each task, first press the task button, then press the menu button. Left, right, back, and OK buttons let you drill up and down through the menus. Dedicated buttons let you change the exposure, reduce or enlarge, and alter image quality while in copy mode. You can also change the paper type (size and quality), as well as switch between the auto sheet feeder and the cassette with a touch of a button. Rounding out the control panel are fax-dedicated buttons (alphanumeric keypad and redial), task start buttons, and a stop/reset button.

To access and replace the ink tanks, simply lift up on the control panel shelf. The MP530 uses a five-ink system: dye-based black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, and a pigment-based black. The dye-based ink tanks cost $14.25 each to replace, and the pigment-based black tank costs $16.25. The printer ships with full ink cartridges, and the printhead is conveniently labeled so that you know where each tank lives. A light mounted on the front of each tank tells you the status of that tank: low ink, empty, and whether it's properly installed. Canon estimates that it costs about 3 cents per page for a black-and-white document and 2 cents per page for a color document--very inexpensive, both for a Canon printer and within the industry.

Features of Canon Pixma MP530

Unlike the photo-centric all-in-ones, the Canon Pixma MP530 includes a fax function, making it a true office workhorse. We wish it was also network-ready, which would make it indispensable in a multiuser environment. Unfortunately, you can connect to it only via USB. You can get around that by connecting the MP530 to a router with a built-in print server or by buying a standalone print server, but a network-ready printer is a much more elegant solution. On the other hand, it does support both Windows and Mac operating systems.

One feature we really like on this machine is the built-in duplexer, which allows for automatic double-sided printing and copying. This is a boon for anyone trying to save money or the environment. When copying, you can reduce or enlarge by using preset ratios (25 to 400 percent), custom ratios (zoom), or automatic ratios (fit to page). You can also adjust the exposure and the image quality or copy to both sides of the page. Other special copy functions include 2-on-1 or 4-on-1 copy, sticker copy, borderless copy, image repeat, and collated copy.

When you connect a PictBridge-enabled camera, you can access the photo print menu by pressing the menu button. Here, you can change paper size and type and the image layout or optimize the image. While we really appreciated it when printers include media card slots, we can understand why an office-oriented all-in-one doesn't.

You can set up the fax function in a number of different ways, depending on your needs. The included user guide outlines your options from connecting to an analog phone line or an ADSL to adding an answering machine to the mix. For numbers you fax to often, you can program up to 40 speed-dial entries. You can even use the ADF for sending a multipage fax. Also, the fax's memory can store up to 150 pages, perfect for when you want to be discreet about incoming faxes or you just want to weed out junk faxes to save paper.

When scanning, you also have a broad range of options. Using the included MP Navigator software, you can quickly select your task and choose options. You can save the document to your PC as a number of different file types, print the scanned document or photo, attach the scan to an e-mail, or use the optical character recognition software to convert the scan into an editable text file. Using the ADF, you can also do batch scanning.

Performance of Canon Pixma MP530

Befitting the Canon Pixma MP530's office-oriented status, it was quick at basic office tasks, but slow at photo printing. It printed text documents at a snappy 6.77 pages per minute, scanned black-and-white images at 5.64ppm, scanned color documents at 5.22ppm, and copied at a rate of 3.83ppm. On the other hand, it printed 4x6 photos at a poky 0.29ppm. The similarly priced HP OfficeJet 5610 offers faster color scanning, but it's slower at everything else.

The print quality was also impressive. The text prints were nearly perfect to the naked eye, about as good as it gets for inkjet printers. The color graphics prints were also excellent: smooth curves, nicely saturated colors, grain-free color blocks, and excellent photo elements. The only problem we saw was some minor banding in color gradients. We also really liked the photo prints: good detail, great color handling (a tad dark, perhaps), and nice flesh tones.

Scan quality is often the downfall of all-in-one printers, but not so for the Pixma MP530. The color scan showed excellent detail and smooth gradients. The colors were a bit on the light side, but nothing egregiously bad. The grayscale scan also displayed nice detail and a good handling of patterns. The Canon Pixma MP530 is an all-around impressive performer.

Third-generation iPod nano

Diminutive player steps up to become an equal to the iPod classic

The reason for this wider figure is to accommodate the new nano’s much larger color screen—it’s now 2 inches, up from 1.5 inches. This change allows the nano to display video just like its larger sibling. (The nano supports MPEG-4 and H.264 videos at resolutions up to up to 640 by 480 pixels.) With the same 320-by-240-pixel resolution as the screen on the iPod classic, the nano’s display features the highest pixel density of any display Apple has ever produced and the screen is also 65 percent brighter than that of the previous nano, according to the company. However, it’s made of the same material as that of previous iPods, rather than the more-durable optical glass used on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Say what you will about the new nano’s squat appearance; the screen makes it clear—no pun intended—that the design is a winner. Despite the smaller size, menu text is clearer and easier to read than it was with the previous model. And even though this is the smallest video-playing screen I’ve used, after watching a 90-minute movie on the nano I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. Picture quality is comparable to that of the iPhone, just smaller. In fact, in my testing the new nano’s screen is superior in terms of clarity and sharpness to that of the iPod classic, although the latter is easier to watch for longer periods thanks to its larger size. (One other minor video issue: Now that it plays video, the nano’s bottom-mounted headphone jack has become an obstacle to placing the player upright for viewing.)

The nano also now supports the same types of iPod games first introduced for full-size iPods in 2006. In fact, it ships with Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike already installed. Unfortunately, games purchased for fifth-generation (5G) iPods don’t work on the new nano or the new iPod classic; you’ll need to purchase new versions of the games, which, according to Apple, have been completely redesigned for the new models. The first such games—Tetris, Ms. Pac-Man, and Sudoku—will be available later in September.

Included with the nano is a dock adapter for Apple’s Universal dock design, Apple's earbuds (standard ones, not the iPhone version featuring a built-in remote button), and a USB dock-connector cable.

Ins and outs

As with its predecessor, the third-generation nano’s 30-pin dock-connector port is on the bottom of the player next to the headphone jack; this time, the Hold switch has been moved there, too. Thankfully, the headphone jack isn’t recessed like that of the iPhone; you can use any headphones with a standard 1/8-inch plug. In addition, the dock-connector port is centered rather than off to the side as on previous nanos, making the new nano look less awkward when used with dock-cradle accessories such as speaker systems.

The nano’s dock-connector port gains the ability, previously limited to full-size iPods, to output video—TV shows, movies, video podcasts, or photos—to a TV. However, early testing indicates that some existing third-party video accessories don’t work with the new nano or the classic. According to Apple, because all video output is directed through the dock connector on the new models—older video-capable models also included a special AV headphone jack—the dock-connector ports have “enhanced capability” with respect to video output that may prevent older video accessories from working. Apple told Macworld that the company is working with vendors to take advantage of these capabilities in future accessories. Unfortunately, there’s no way to determine if current accessories—even those with official Made For iPod certification—will work without actually trying them. Apple has announced component- and composite-video dock-connector cables of its own for $49 each; each includes an AC adapter.

Like previous versions, the new nano supports Nike’s Nike+iPod Sport Kit. The nano should also be compatible with most dock-connector accessories—speakers, chargers, batteries, and so on—that physically accommodate the new shape. However, there are exceptions. In addition to the video-out accessories mentioned above, Apple’s Camera Connector and FM transmitters that display the tuning frequency on the iPod’s own screen don’t work. In addition, although microphone attachments, such as those from Belkin, Griffin Technology, and XtremeMac, let you record audio using the 3G nano, you can’t control recording using buttons on the microphone, and connecting such a microphone doesn’t automatically bring up the Voice Memos screen; you need to manually navigate to it.

New on the menu

Along with hardware changes, the new nano also gets the same updated iPod software as the iPod classic. Although basic menu navigation hasn’t changed, the look of those menus has. For example, whenever Music, Videos, or Photos is selected on the main menu, the screen is split in half, with the right-hand side displaying a Ken-Burns-effect-like preview of items in that category (album covers, video frames, or photos, respectively). This split view continues within each category as you browse submenus; the preview area also indicates if a category or list is empty. To get the full effect of this preview pane, you need to enable the option (in iTunes) to display album artwork on your iPod; if you disable this option, the preview pane simply shows a generic icon for each category along with a status message indicating the number of items in that category.

Once you get to item listings, the display changes depending on the type of listing: the Playlists screen lists each playlist along with the number of tracks it contains; the Albums and Audiobooks screens list the items of that type, each with a small cover image to the left; and the Songs screen lists each song along with the name of the artist below it. The additional information provided by these new menus makes finding content easier, although if you have a large music library, the two-line-per-track Songs list takes longer to scroll through.

Another welcome improvement is that the Playlists menu now reflects the folder/playlist hierarchy you’ve set up in iTunes. In other words, you finally get playlist folder support in the iPod’s menus.

The preview area for the other items in the main menu displays useful status information: Extras displays a large clock with the current time, Settings indicates the amount of free space on the iPod, and Shuffle Songs shows the number of songs.

The new iPod software also includes a version of iTunes’ Cover Flow feature. Select this item from the Music menu and—assuming you’ve chosen to display album art on your iPod—you can use the Click Wheel to cycle through the album covers for music tracks. When you find the album you want, clicking the Center button brings up a list of tracks on that album; select a track to begin playback. As I noted in my first look at the revamped iPod line, Cover Flow feels slower on the new iPods than it does in iTunes. This is especially the case when you flip through enough covers that the iPod has to load more images: in iTunes, the process is nearly instantaneous; on the iPod, there’s a noticeable delay and it’s easy to get to the point where you’re scrolling through generic covers.

Similarly, the increased use of album art and previews throughout the new iPods’ interface makes for a better visual experience, but it’s not without drawbacks. For example, overall menu navigation feels a bit slower than that of previous iPods since the iPod has to load different graphics whenever you select a new menu, and the performance of the Albums listing is noticeably slower due to the fact that album art has to be loaded as you’re scrolling. When I disabled the transfer of album art to the iPod and re-synced with iTunes, the nano’s menus felt zippier.

Extras and settings

Apple has left few aspects of the iPod’s interface untouched. Although the options in the Extras menu remain largely the same, the visuals have undergone considerable changes, as has the status screen while syncing and charging—all look noticeably better, with better graphics and clearer messages.

These are still iPod Extras, though; they don’t look like the iPhone versions. You also can’t enter data—for example, for Contacts or Calendar—on the iPod.

An updated Now Playing screen looks much like the one you’ll see on the Apple TV—except with a white background—and displays more information than before: artist, track, album, rating, and track number. Even the Search feature in the Music menu has received a makeover.

The Settings menu has received a similar aesthetic and functional overhaul, with each item getting its own fancy preview. Each setting screen looks better and most provide more information. For example, the About menu now displays a graphical breakdown of your iPod’s storage usage, similar to the one displayed in iTunes, and the EQ menu, while still only letting you choose from among presets, now displays graphics representing which frequencies are boosted or reduced with each setting. You can also customize the Music menu, and the new iPods even have a sort of “screen saver” that, after a period of control inactivity during music playback, displays the time and a battery level. These are minor details, but ones that don’t go unnoticed as you use the player.

The nano features two other notable settings changes. First, you no longer have to navigate up several levels to the main menu and then down to the Settings menu just to change shuffle mode. Instead, when viewing the Now Playing screen, you simply press the Center button three times to bring up the shuffle settings, and then use the Click Wheel to choose the shuffle mode—Off, Songs, or Album. Second, The new iPod software includes a long-requested feature for video-watching: closed captioning. With this option enabled and a closed-captioned video playing, that text should be displayed on the screen. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any such videos to test; I’m curious to see how readable closed captioning will be on the nano’s 2-inch screen.

Playing, syncing

Apple claims the new nano will provide up to 24 hours of music playback—similar to the previous model—or up to 5 hours of video playback. To test the former estimate, I set a fully-charged nano to Repeat All mode and then played back a 1,000-song playlist of 128kbps AAC tracks downloaded from the iTunes Store; volume was set to the midpoint, and the screen was set to dim after 10 seconds of inactivity. The nano played continuously for nearly 31 hours, 20 minutes before the battery died. Battery life will be shorter if you frequently skip songs or if you use the nano’s backlight for extended periods, but the result does show that Apple’s estimates are fair. To test video-playback battery life, I repeatedly played a feature-length movie purchased from the iTunes store; the nano again bested Apple’s estimates, clocking in at just over 5 hours, 20 minutes.

The iPod nano’s audio quality is comparable to that of the previous model, which is to say very good for a portable device but, as with all iPod models, limited by Apple’s earbuds. With better headphones, the higher the quality of audio files you feed the nano, the better it sounds. I also played the nano’s dock-connector audio output through my reference stereo system, and it again sounded excellent, revealing the differences between higher- and lower-quality audio files.

As with all recent iPods, the nano automatically syncs your media with iTunes via a USB 2.0 connection. Like previous iPods—and unlike the iPhone—it also offers a mode for managing the iPod’s contents manually.

The lowdown

The forthcoming release of the iPod touch complicates the larger “Which iPod should I buy?” question. But when it comes to traditional iPods, the decision has never been easier.

For those without huge iTunes libraries—or people who don’t mind managing which part of their library to take with them—the nano is a clear winner. It’s been improved in almost every way, to the point where it’s essentially a miniaturized version of the iPod classic available for as little as $149, with all the same features and capabilities including video playback and output. (It also has the same limitations, such as an easily-scratched backside.) The only major compromises for choosing the nano are a smaller screen, a smaller Click Wheel, and less storage capacity, but in return you get smaller physical size, flash memory, and a lower price tag. Apple may call the iPod touch the “best iPod yet,” but for many people, that award just may go to this Saltine-cracker-sized player.
